Shostakovich: String Quartet No.15 in E flat minor, Op. 144
The darkest of the dark. The one-movement Thirteenth Quartet is tormented by intimations of death and ends in a scream of pain; the Fourteenth is suffused with lyricism but acknowledges that it comes from a lost world; the six slow movements of No. 15 end the cycle by staring into the void.
