Tripartite Structures: The case of underground punk in the North West of England
Social networks are often inherently complex and it is important to develop new methods to deal with these complex structures. Methods and models are now well developed to deal with bipartite networks, containing actors of two different types and with ties between these different nodes. As social networks researchers often we seek to identify local configurations, present in a global network of connected actors, which have explanatory power for some social phenomena we are trying to explore. Configurations of interest in bipartite networks are well defined and software is available that is able to model these networks using ERGMs. Using the underground punk music network in the North West as an example, this paper will introduce the concept of tripartite closure in a network of this type, and will introduce a method for testing whether two separate bipartite ERGM models are sufficient for explaining tripartite closure patterns.
