The Manchester International Law Centre (MILC) and the Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) are pleased to announce an interdisciplinary workshop for early-career researchers (third-year PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and Lecturers/Assistant Professors) across the social sciences and humanities.
The workshop will bring together researchers investigating how normative orders emerge and operate across different semi-peripheries – a concept from world-systems theory describing locations free from colonial rule yet subject to informal forms of imperial influence. Its aim is to deepen our understanding of how international, global, transnational, and local normative orders have been constructed, transformed, or contested in these often-overlooked settings, and to examine how these trajectories have intersected with, diverged from, or continued alongside those of the colonised periphery, past and present.
The workshop will be led by Professor George Galindo (University of Brasília), who will be at the Manchester International Law Centre as a Simon Visiting Professor. Up to six early career researchers will present pre-circulated drafts and receive detailed feedback from Professor Galindo and the workshop group.
Date: Thursday, 20 November 2025, 1 to 4 pm
Location: Whitworth Building, Keepers Room, University of Manchester
About the workshop leader: George Galindo is Professor of International Law at the University of Brasília and the Brazilian Diplomatic Academy, and Principal Legal Adviser to Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also serves on the International Law Commission and the Inter-American Juridical Committee. His expertise lies in the history, theory, and practice of international law, diplomacy, and governance.
How to apply: Applications should include a one-page CV and a summary (up to 500 words) of the research paper you wish to present, to be sent to milc@manchester.ac.uk by 15 October 2025. Applicants will be notified by 20 October 2025. If you have accessibility needs or questions about the format, please include them in your email.
The workshop is convened by Dr Emma Nyhan and Dr Justina Uriburu, Lecturers in International Law and MILC CO-Directors, who are leading the organisation of the event on behalf of MILC and CLACS.
