Some 800 million people live within 100 km of an active volcanic system and their observations provide useful insights on the phenomena, impacts and attendant uncertainty when they erupt. Analysis of community experiences have generated details on the dispersal and impacts of volcanic ash, the initiation of eruptions and the consequences of volcanic uncertainty. This talk explores these insights and the research questions they stimulate for scientists working with volcanic and other hazards.
