Join us for this PSI seminar with guest speaker Prof. Eva Rentschler. Metallacrown Complexes (MCs) are composed of metal ions and bridging ligands that form cyclic ring structures in a self-assembly reaction. These complexes have been extensively studied in the past years for their coordination ability with hydroxamic acid and derivatives, particularly with first-row transition metal ions. The atomic arrangement in MCs allows for adjustable magnetic exchange between the metal ions within the ring structure. By employing the magnetic director approach, high spin ground states in MCs have already been achieved. The most important requirement for switchable SMMs, however, is anisotropy. Prof. Rentschler therefore aimed to implement metal ions able to contribute significantly with high single ion anisotropy. In this presentation, Prof Rentschler will discuss their approach, which involves enhancing the overall magnetic anisotropy by incorporating lanthanide ions in 3d-4f-metallacrowns. These systems exhibit SMM behavior and hold promise for future applications in data storage, quantum computers, and molecular electronics, as discussed in physics, chemistry, and materials science.
