At this event, award-winning Palestinian poet, Dr Yousif M. His poems, read by Yousif for the first time in Manchester, will be interpreted by Reem Anbar, the first woman oud player from Gaza and muwashahat sung by AMES student, Nour-Sima Alsabbagh. The readings are followed by a Q&A led by Dr Ruth Abou Rached (AMES) and Dr Anastasia Valassopoulos (E&CW).
Organised by Landscapes of Future Memory: Creatives, Literatures and Cultures of the Middle East (AMES) and ‘Defiance: Artists at Risk’. (REES).
Kindly funded by SALC Social Responsibility Awards and SALC Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG)
"Yousif M. Qasmiyeh's Writing The Camp is an exceptional, essential collection drawn from the poet's experience of the Baddawi refugee camp in Lebanon. The poetry moves beyond the observational into a philosophical meditation on the existential nature of place... a brave and beautiful work, one which will surely be of historical importance...." (Poetry Book Society)
This event commemorates and marks how the cultural expressions of Palestinian exiles manage to prevail in differing times and places.
