Dr Fabien Léonard will present The University of Manchester at Harwell (UoMaH) and its raison d’être: to identify and help bring forward new techniques and technologies for light source innovation, data analytics and facility science.
Dr Tristan Lowe, Senior Experimental Officer with The Henry Moseley X-ray Imaging Facility (HMXIF) at The University of Manchester, will be co-presenting. Tristan has worked for a number of years as a consultant for industrial partners in the Aerospace, Automotive, Nuclear and petrology industries; his presentation will focus on the metrology side of CT measurements.
The UoMaH team provides equipment and support for high risk experiments and those carried out under extreme sample environments, across all the central facilities at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL). Examples will illustrate how UoMaH is making hazardous experiments (toxic, radioactive and irradiated samples) low risks so that both users and facility are assured of operations, and which results are delivered. As the data analysis manager, Fabien will cover some of the data analysis challenges faced across the central facilities, but from a user’s point of view. Examples will show the problems encountered, and the current solutions provided by the UoMaH team, from data reconstruction to data processing for X-ray and neutron tomography, as well as the future developments to handle other modalities. Overall, this seminar will demonstrate how UoMaH creates a portal between The University of Manchester and Harwell to work with our partners to augment the thriving research environment at Harwell.
Topics covered in Dr Léonard 's talk:
- Introduction on UoMaH (people and resources)
- Example of hazardous experiments & results (also rigs and containment cells)
- Example advanced data processing (& introduction to the Nikon)
- Data challenges at central facilities
- UoMaH capabilities for data reconstruction
- Upcoming training courses
This is the sixth seminar in The University of Manchester at Harwell Ideas Forum Imaging series. The aim of this series is to increase networking of academics and researchers across the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the National Laboratories. In doing so, we hope to link experienced users with new users to teach them about the University of Manchester and the Harwell National Facilities.
This seminar will be recorded and available to watch after the event.
A zoom link will be sent to attendees the day before the seminar.
