Retrofitted Cities: Transforming Buildings From Within
This presentation represents a synopsis of the key arguments made in my forthcoming monograph with the same title (IB Tauris, 2014). The book focuses on the different ways in which households transform the grain of the city over time, by modifying the physical structure, social meaning and economic function of residential dwellings in line with changing needs. The presentation, therefore, highlights the creative practices and alternative economic relations associated with transformations of the domestic built environment, while exploring the multiple mechanisms through which everyday interventions in the structure of the home weave the wider urban fabric in social, cultural, economic and architectural terms. While primarily based on empirical work in Central Europe, these explorations are placed within the context of wider debates on urban retrofit, inequality and resilience at a global scale.
