Sofia Gubaidulina: Reflections on the Theme B-A-C-H
Claude Debussy: String Quartet in G minor, L.91
Debussy’s String Quartet of 1893, written when the composer was 31 years old, was described at the time as being ‘dominated by the influence of young Russia’. Fast-forwarding to our own time, this is paired with a work by one of Russia’s foremost composers of today. Sofia Gubaidulina’s Reflections on B-A-C-H joins a long tradition, dating back to Johann Sebastian himself, in taking the letters of the composer’s name and turning them into the notes of a musical theme.
