The most adventurous of Beethoven’s early quartets is famous for its finale introduction, entitled ‘La Malinconia’; what better pairing, then, than Guillaume Lekeu’s 1887 quartet movement inspired by the Biblical text: ‘My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death’?
