Distance learning is an increasingly significant component of teaching provision at the University of Manchester and in Higher Education more broadly. A common effect of distance learning has been a sense of isolation engendered among the student body due to the geographical and physical distance from campus and their tutors. Repurposing recently implemented lecture capturing technologies at the University of Manchester and adapting them for online teaching provisions can help to create a greater sense of classroom community among distance learning students and simultaneously create a more streamlined and contained process for lecture creation, editing and dissemination. The intended learning outcomes are:

1. Discuss the role of classroom community feeling in distance vs. face-to-face learning environments. 2. Investigate some common perceptions about distance learning cohorts. 3. See examples of how to adapt new lecture capture technologies at UoM to build and enhance the sense of classroom community among distance learning cohorts. 4. Underscore the role of distance learning within the University’s 2020 framework.

The Academy for Education and Professional Development’s mission is “To ensure consistent high-quality development and delivery of educational programmes with student experience at their heart”. Academy events are open to all those who contribute to the development, delivery and management of FBMH undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development programmes including staff from across the University, the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre and our NHS clinical education partners. The Pedagogy Seminar Series provides a forum to discuss research undertaken and/or pedagogy literature of interest.
