Natalie Cunningham (Host), Senior Lecturer in Leadership for Development Tom O’Brien, Global Development Expert

Climate change represents one of the most complex and daunting challenges confronting today’s development practitioners and organisations. As extreme weather events hit vulnerable Global South communities at an ever-growing and disproportionate pace, new questions arise about how to implement development strategies in a changing world.

What effect will climate change have on existing regional conflicts, resource shortages, industrial developments, and migration patterns? And how can development leaders manage the stakeholder tensions that arise from these problems? How can we foster economic growth and stability while mitigating the impact of development projects on the environment? What responsibilities do organisations in the Global North have in reckoning with climate change and environmental degradation as legacies of colonialism and exploitation?

In our next Community of Practice, we’ll discuss these issues and more with Tom O’Brien, a professional economist and global development expert with over three decades of front-line experience. Tom will discuss his first-hand experiences of juggling competing pressures within the World Bank as the Vice President’s Senior Adviser for Africa before opening the floor to wider discussion. As ever, we welcome participants from a range of career stages, sectors, and backgrounds.

Please register via Zoom and get in touch with Natalie Cunningham (natalie.cunningham-3@manchester.ac.uk) if you have any questions.
