Speaker: Prof Jakub Bijak, Professor of Social Statistics and Demography, University of Southampton

Abstract: Two defining features of contemporary international migration are its complexity and uncertainty. Migration processes are driven by many interacting and often unpredictable factors. Our weak understanding of migration is further complicated by its fragmented theoretical description, scattered across various disciplines, and the presence of many interacting agents with different goals. Besides, migration flows elude precise definitions and concepts, and lack quality tools for their measurement. If migration is to be better understood and managed, its complexity and uncertainty require adopting new analytical perspectives and new methods, which would acknowledge and address these challenges explicitly. In this talk, I will present the most recent advances in statistical and computational modelling, aimed at a better estimation, prediction and simulation of international migration.

Tea/coffee and cakes from 2.45.
