Overweight and obesity are a major public health concern with about one quarter of children leaving primary school in the overweight category based on their BMI. Stark inequalities in the risk of obesity during childhood are evident, but few studies have examined potential underlying pathways to observed inequalities. This talk focuses on two areas: 1. the potential contribution of factors linked to the ‘obesogenic’ environment (including during pregnancy and infancy, childhood physical activity and diet) in the production of inequalities; 2. an examination of the psychosocial correlates of different patterns of BMI growth.
