China’s rise is transforming global politics and economics, from Manchester to Manhattan. But China’s economic and security impact is being felt first and foremost by its Asian neighbours. How do they feel about China’s rapidly increasing influence in Asia? This talk explores what Pew and other extant surveys can teach us about how China’s neighbours feel about China’s rise. In 2018, Singaporeans and Indonesians were the most positive towards China, while Taiwanese, Filipinos, and Vietnamese were the most negative, with Japanese and Koreans in-between. What best explains this pattern of Asian views of China’s rise? Survey limitations and foreign policy implications will also be discussed.
