Abstract of the lecture
In the design of mechanical components and structures, the presence of geometrical discontinuities is unavoidable. These geometrical discontinuities are usually the weakest points of the structure and act as stress raisers and therefore prone to local failure under mechanical loading. Therefore, it is of great importance to control the stress level around these areas to prevent the early failure of the structure. The performed work at our AM group in NTNU focuses on investigating case studies where the incorporation of metamaterials as a tailoring tool resulted in minimized stress levels in notched components leading to enhanced fatigue strength. For this aim, several cases of geometrically tailored notched specimens were studied by performing numerical and experimental analyses and the effect of geometrical tailoring on the fatigue behavior has been evaluated. Alternative solutions by local altering of the microstructure are under study which enables the designers in the field to achieve higher durability of the AM parts.
Bio of the speaker
Javad Razavi holds a MSc. and a Ph.D. within fatigue and fracture of metallic materials and structures. Since 2020 he has been full time Associate Professor within Design and Manufacturing at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering of Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). In the past 12 years he has been actively conducting experimental, computational, and numerical research studies in the field of fatigue and fracture mechanics of engineering and innovative materials and mechanical components. His research endeavor is also on the link between design, fabrication process and mechanical behaviour with specific interests in the novel fabrication techniques such as additive manufacturing. He is currently the head of fatigue and fracture mechanics lab at NTNU and is editorial board member in five peer reviewed journals and an active reviewer in over 90 international journals.
