Abstract: Fluids in the eye have many important functions, such as regulating the intraocular pressure, delivering nutrients to the avascular intraocular tissue of the cornea and the lens, and contributing to adhesion forces between the sensory retina and the retinal pigment epithelium. Failure of these functions may lead to a number of pathological conditions. Understanding ocular fluid mechanics is thus important to prevent and/or treat such conditions.
In this talk I will discuss several topics related to fluid transport in the eye, with the main focus on transport across ocular epithelia: the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and the ciliary epithelium (CE). I will introduce a general framework to model fluid and solute transport, which includes possible transport mechanisms, such as osmosis, electro-osmosis and local osmosis. The model will then be applied to study the flow across the RPE, which is responsible for removal of fluid from the sub-retinal space and the CE, which produces aqueous humor and is one of the key players for regulating the intraocular pressure.
