University Heritage Tours
As part of The University of Manchester’s Community Festival 2023, we invite you to join our Heritage Tour. Tours run at 11am, 12:30pm, and 2pm. Booking essential.
The University of Manchester was the country’s first ‘civic’ university. Our civic identity has made us one of the most successful universities in the world.
Uncover the stories behind our historic buildings as we take you on a tour of our unique campus. Starting in the university's neo-gothic Old Quadrangle, this tour explores the origins of the University of Manchester - a radical, progressive institution rooted in the inequality, exploitation and innovation that made Manchester the 'shock city' of the industrial revolution. Join us for a story of pioneering figures and world-changing discoveries; some written in the names of our buildings, others hidden just below the surface. Our tour concludes on the 'Street of Science', the street that changed the world.
Tours last up to an hour, and will be outdoors throughout. Attendees under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. At the end of the tour, you will be guided to our new Engineering Building.
