Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre has been translated more than 600 times, into at least 68 languages. How can we grasp this plural, global, transtemporal and multilingual text? Is it in any sense possible to read it? With many collaborators, I’ve spent several years trying, and the results have just been published in an open-access, multimodal, interactive volume, Prismatic Jane Eyre: Close-Reading a World Novel Across Languages (https://www.openbookpublishers.com/books/10.11647/obp.0319 openbookpublishers.com). In the talk, I will describe some of the challenges we faced, how we met them (or not), and the techniques we adopted, including interactive digital maps and multilingual visualisations. I will also trace out the project’s theoretical underpinnings and ramifications, including the ideas of ‘prismatic translation’ and the ‘world work’.
