Mental health has received increasing attention in empirical work on development in developing countries. This talk presents new results on empirical associations between empowerment, mobile phone use and depression in Dhaka. Empowerment, in particular its agency component, has long been identified as constitutive of and contributor to development. The agency or freedom to make life-affirming choices not only is an end but also an instrument to secure whole aspects of development such as a healthy life.
