Part of the Creative stream organised by methods@manchester, this event offers a practical introduction and develops a critical consideration of sensory methods. Sensory methods can include a broad range of research strategies. The aim is to explore sensory approaches to research methods, including combining such approaches in conventional and less conventional methods such as interviews, ethnographic research and experimental arrangements, and to understand theoretical and practical considerations for involving sensory methods in research. Participants will become acquainted with sensory methods through practical experience focusing on smells. The course will then involve research presentations on methodological issues, case studies, as well as time for strategic planning of participants’ own project ideas. An after-class cold shower is recommended, but is not essential.
