Navigating Demand and Technological Windows of Opportunity: The Role of International Experience
Abstract:
This paper contributes to the literature on windows of opportunity from an organizational learning perspective. It investigates whether the depth and breadth of a firm’s international experience with pronounced changes in demand conditions (demand windows) and technologies (technological windows) affects its ability to take advantage of such changes within a country to increase its market share. The results, based on a sample of 618 telecommunication companies competing in 124 countries, suggest that three out of four dimensions of international experience help firms to exploit windows of opportunity in a country. Additional analyses also show that the effect of such experiences is stronger when a firm encounters windows in countries with low institutional quality, and when the firm is a challenger instead of a market leader.
Claudio Giachetti is Full Professor of Strategy in the Department of Management at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Italy), where he also received his Ph.D. in Business Economics.
