Abstract: Orientations to English in Anglophone International Universities
With the internationalisation of Higher Education, universities are increasingly home to vibrant communities of people with diverse linguacultural backgrounds. UK universities and their wider networks are multilingual sites of education and collaboration, with English often being used as a lingua franca. In such contexts, how do members of international universities orient towards uses of English(es)? How do staff and students accommodate the sociocultural and linguistic diversity which exists? What steps can be taken to better ensure inclusive practice in cohorts with diverse linguacultural backgrounds? In this talk, compelling research in the fields of Intercultural Communication and English as a Lingua Franca will be shared to shed light on these crucial questions. Staff, student and policy-maker approaches to academic English will be discussed. In doing so, the talk underscores the importance of ensuring sufficient visibility, accommodation and nurturing of linguistic diversity.
Staff and students from all disciplines are very welcome to attend.
