Nonparental child-care arrangements are an important aspect of parents' daily lives. Formal and informal child care (by professionals and relatives or friends respectively) allows parents to combine work and family demands, but also often involves complicated coordination. Parents' work schedules are important in this respect, as rotating schedules and nonstandard working hours can limit the childcare options parents have. We will therefore examine how modern-day work characteristics affect childcare arrangements. Moreover, as both parents' work schedules influence the need for nonparental child care and the difficulty of arranging this, we will study the interdependency between parents' work schedules and its influence on parental well-being. In addition, by studying the relationship between parents and child-care personnel, we gain insight into the conditions under which child-care arrangements affect child well-being. Lastly, we will analyse cross-national variations in the association between child-care arrangements and child well-being by contrasting the Netherlands with the UK and Finland.
