We are pleased to announce that the 2025 Samuel Ferguson lecturer is Prof. J. Kameron Carter (University of California, Irvine).

Prof. Carter is Professor of African American Studies, Comparative Literature & Religious Studies, and has published Race: A Theological Account (Oxford, 2008) and The Anarchy of Black Religion: A Mystic Song (Duke, 2023). The latter is the first in a trilogy on The Black Study of Religion.

Ferguson lecture: “Authoritarianism; or, Theology and the Strongman” Thursday 6 March, 4-5.30 PM, conference room C1.18 in the Ellen Wilkinson building (no. 77 on the campus map) at the University of Manchester, followed by a reception.

While a growing body of literature is looking into the nexus of authoritarianism, resurgent fascism, (ethno-) nationalism and runaway capitalism, often under the rubric of the problem of “the Strongman,” such analyses rarely consider the theological dimensions of this contemporary problem. Building on the work of W. E. B. Du Bois and black feminism’s critique of the “patriarch form,” this talk begins to address the specifically Christian theological dimensions of the ideology of the Strongman by locating it within a long history or genealogy of race, gender, and political theology.

Prof. Carter will also give a presentation at Manchester Cathedral on the topic “Beyond Idolatry (Political and Otherwise)” on Thursday 6 March, 12–1 PM, Full details in the links.

Both events are free, and tickets are not required.

Price: Free
