‘Honour’-based abuse (HBA) has now been recognised as a significant
social problem in the United Kingdom. Once absent from national-level
discussion, the last two decades have seen several developments aimed at
increasing awareness, protecting and supporting victims, and bringing
perpetrators to justice. These developments have included the introduction
of a national policing strategy for HBA (2008), the criminalisation of forced
marriage (2014) and the creation of a national Day of Memory for victims
(2015).
Existing research indicates that HBA is both under-reported and under-
recorded. Victims face significant barriers to disclosing and reporting
offences. Research conducted by the University of Manchester indicates
that there are also many barriers in aiding professionals in identifying and
addressing HBA. When HBA is identified, victims may not receive the
appropriate response from professionals or in the cases of reports made to
the police, there may not be enough evidence to charge perpetrators. All
this creates a very challenging environment in which to address HBA
Join us from 5pm on Thursday 9th May where our panel of experts will be
discussing these issues and more. You’ll have the opportunity to put your
questions to a range of professionals, including representatives from Karma
Nirvana, The University of Manchester, West Yorkshire Police, education
and a local community organisation.
