Session abstract

This session brings together experts on gendered mobility to discuss how to develop a gender-sensitive transport policy agenda based on recent research findings and introduce our upcoming book on Gendered Mobilities in the Global South (2025, Edward Elgar). Gender has been one of the most prominent topics in the debate on transport-related inequalities. However, problems persist around the world as gender roles and gender identities determine how public space is used and how these identities are represented in transport policy. While the Global North is promoting a transport policy agenda that focuses not only on distributional issues but also on deliberative and procedural issues, in the Global South, gender-inclusive planning is still an emerging concept. In this sense, there remains a lack of dialogue between research and policy. A new book on Gendered Mobilities in the Global South would fulfil this need. Analysing gendered mobilities in more than ten countries in the Global South, in this book, we will explore the relationship between spatial development and transport infrastructure, the role of transport in women's participation in everyday life and its impact on women's empowerment. This seminar will initiate a dialogue for a gender-sensitive transport policy agenda in the Global South.
