Join us for this seminar by Alexandru Hening (Texas, US) as part of the North West Seminar Series in Mathematical Biology and Data Sciences.

The talk will be hosted in person in room 4.63 of the Simon Building. For those who cannot attend in person the talk will also be streamed via zoom, please contact carl.whitfield@manchester.ac.uk or igor.chernyavsky@manchester.ac.uk for the zoom link, or sign up to the mailing list.

Title: Modern Coexistence Theory and beyond Abstract: A fundamental problem from population biology is finding conditions under which interacting species coexist or go extinct. I will present results that lay the foundation for a general theory of stochastic coexistence. This theory extends and makes rigorous Modern Coexistence Theory and leads to resolving a number of conjectures due to Chesson, Ellner, and Palis. I explain how this theory can be used to show that random environmental fluctuations can rescue species from extinction.
