In Marina Carr's epic tragedy of rural life, three generations of the Rafterys live together in the midlands of Ireland. In their closely knit farming community, hatred and rumours of incest, stillborn children, and abused families seem more common than love and affection. Ruled over by the unstable and violent Redmond Raftery, the family has fallen into a vicious cycle of aggression, fear and madness. An opportunity for escape appears for youngest daughter, Sorrel, through her engagement to the ambitious and caring Dara Mood, causing tensions within the family to come to a shocking and harrowing head. Will Sorrel manage to free herself from her father’s powerful hold and live the life she had always dreamed of, or will she follow her family’s miserable and incestuous precedents? On Raftery’s Hill explores a family’s struggle against dark destinies, a family at war with itself.
From the 24th-26th November 2010, the John Thaw Studio Theatre plays host to one of the three spectacular performances from the University of Manchester Drama Society's "Autumn Showcase".
