Celebrating older people’s lives and communities in North Manchester: An exhibition and celebration event
This event celebrates the lives of older people living in North Manchester and their contribution to their communities.
At this pop-up exhibition, creative work produced by older residents and community groups across North Manchester will be shown including photographs, a zine, embroideries and calligraphy. These creative pieces were created during a year-long participatory project led by Camilla Lewis and Niamh Kavanagh from the Manchester Urban Ageing Research Group (funded by Healthier Futures).
North Manchester is an area of rich ethnic, cultural and religious diversity, with an ageing population. The project highlighted how older people are active members of their communities and hold a strong sense of identity and belonging. Many express a desire to age in place in their communities, and to contribute to future discussion about their neighbourhoods which are undergoing rapid urban redevelopment.
Councillor Shaukat Ali, Lord Mayor will open the event and celebrate the contribution of community members to this project. Reflections from a panel of older residents who were involved in the creative workshops will be shared and a discussion about how older people can play an active role in future discussions about their neighbourhoods.
Attendees are invited to take part in a guided tour of the Museum’s South-Asia gallery. The first permanent gallery in the UK to celebrate the experiences and contribution of the South Asian diaspora, and it displays world-class material from the British Museum alongside the best of South Asian collections in Manchester.
Vegetarian refreshments will be served.
Following the event, the exhibition will be on show in the Glass Cooridor Exhibition Space in December 2026.
