Electronic systems form the backbone of large-scale projects in fields such as energy production and general scientific experiments. These systems are critical to accurate monitoring and diagnosis within complex infrastructure, and ensuring their continued operation in challenging environments is critical.
This Expert Insights seminar will provide an overview of how electricity and electronics are handled in nuclear environments. Our speaker James Devine will provide a background to the electrical infrastructure at CERN, safety principles and considerations for large and small-scale experiments, and the challenges with designing electronics for radiation environments.
Speaker
James Devine
Role: Electrical Engineer
Organisation: CERN (European Council for Nuclear Research)
Biography: James Devine is an electrical engineer at CERN, where he has worked since 2010, and currently serves as Electrical Safety Officer in the Experimental Physics Department. He holds a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Imperial College London, and is a Chartered Engineer and Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). At CERN his work has spanned electrical infrastructure across the laboratory — emergency generators, substation design and construction, the development of new physics facilities, and the refurbishment of the CERN injector complex.
