In this talk, we argue that knowledge of linguistics can be extremely useful, particularly for language experts (teachers, translators, etc.). Far from the preconceived idea that a linguist is a scientist locked in their ivory tower, we show that linguistics has far-reaching applications even within the realm of academia. The talk begins by presenting some general aspects of the scientific study of language, and then moves on to investigate some of the domains where knowledge of linguistics can save the day. The data discussed show how linguistic science possesses powerful conceptual tools capable of shedding light on language processes that speakers carry out automatically and unconsciously, phenomena that, at first sight, have no apparent explanation.
