The Music Department’s Nigerian Gospel Singing Ensemble is back for another end-of-year public performance. The ensemble was first formed in September 2021 to enable an encounter with a music tradition developing in postcolonial Nigeria and proudly standing among the most popular, globally spread expressive repertoires of today's Nigeria. This 40min performance comprises diverse Nigerian gospel tunes in English, Nigerian Pidgin, Yoruba, and Igbo, and in both praise and worship styles. For the most part this is a medley arrangement, following the mode in which such songs are put together in worship settings to enable senses of spirituality and community-making. Second- and third-year students from Music and Joint Courses showcase skills in lead singing, call-and-response, improvisation, syncopation, singing-movement coordination and code-switching.
All welcome!
