Anthony Capildeo, University of York, ‘The Stones Will Speak’
Ellen Wilkinson C1.18. Followed by a reception in the atrium.
Ideas of reading place ‘vertically’ through time, and in particular the traces of medieval built environments, inform my creative and academic work. For example, the UNESCO Imagining the City project (2021) saw me ‘twinning’ the isolation and dazzle of snowbound, lockdown, coastal Edinburgh with readings from Julian of Norwich via a walking journal and erasure poems. I'd like to reflect on place itself as a living, habitable archive that can be retranslated by memory, contemplation, and movement into deliberately shaped forms of words. The outward and the inward connect and spark.
