The Samuel Ferguson Lecture—Thursday 7 March 2024

We are pleased to announce that the 2024 Samuel Ferguson lecturer is Prof. Niels Henrik Gregersen (Copenhagen University).

The focus of Professor Gregersen’s research is constructive Christian theology in the context of secularized and multi-religious Western societies, including public theology; and the field of science & religion, especially the philosophy of evolutionary biology and the sciences of complexity.

This year’s Ferguson Lecture is again hosted jointly between the Department of Religions and Theology and Manchester Cathedral. Prof. Gregersen will make a presentation at Manchester Cathedral at 12pm and then give a lecture at 4 PM at the University of Manchester.

UPDATED VENUE: Ferguson presentation: ‘The role of the cathedral in contemporary culture: Danish experiences’, Thursday 7 March, 12 – 1 PM, Regimental Chapel, Manchester Cathedral, followed by lunch.

Due to their prominent and often urban setting, cathedrals are open to a wider sense of sociality and transcendence in comparison with other church buildings. In his presentation, Professor Gregersen will speak about Danish experiences with different kinds of rural and urban church buildings, about the life that flows through church doors, and about the fluid relations between the churches and public life in Denmark. What are the similarities and differences to English experiences – in terms of ecclesial models, and in terms of participation, Christian identity, and cultural identity?

Free to attend and tickets are not required.
