This is a course on the FBMH Academic Development Programme, welcome to all colleagues within the Faculty. In this session we will focus on demystifying the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), and how and why it can be seen as a tool for driving teaching enhancement and improving the experience for all our students.

The precise content for the session will be driven by attendees’ preferences, areas they wish to focus on, but is likely to include consideration of the criteria (“aspects”) and data (“indicators”) that go into producing the TEF, the outcomes, as well as where anyone can find the TEF data for their own local area. Attendees will look at data for their local area and consider actions that can be taken in light of them.

We will explore the “golden threads” in the institution’s 2023 submission as well as plans for the 2027 submission, and discuss how attendees’ current and planned practice can support these strategic aims.

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)

  • Identify key elements of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and how this affects you.
  • Understand where to find, and be able to interrogate, TEF data.
  • Interrogate the TEF data for your local area to understand how things look relative to benchmarks for various splits
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the “golden threads” presented in the institution’s TEF 2023 submission – and plans for the TEF 2027 submission - and consider how these may apply to and enhance your own teaching practice
  • Understand “Educational Gains” and how these might be demonstrated
  • Consider potential obstacles to enhancing teaching, student experience, and outcomes
  • Understand what “Teaching Excellence” means to you.
