3-4.30pm. With Henry McGhie, Head of Collections and Curator of Zoology, The Manchester Museum. Living Worlds opened in April 2011 as the latest display of one of the Museum's original 1891 galleries. This talk will explore Living Worlds from conception to realisation: the gallery's grade 2* listed status, the relationships between its original functions and present uses, and the relationships between what people do when in the museum and beyond their visit. This talk also explores the changing nature of natural history displays and their role, given changing knowledge about the natural world and people's relationships with it. The process of development will be explored, the rationale behind the selection of themes and topics for displays, the use of smart-phone technology and the relations with the wider university of which the museum is a part.
