Senior presenter: Professor Iain Pretty, School of Dentistry, “Evaluation of a water fluoridation scheme in Cumbria”
Iain qualified in dentistry from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1998. After a brief spell in general practice he attended the University of British Columbia to undertake a Master’s degree in oral biology. Iain left UBC in 2000 joining Sue Higham and Mike Edgar at the University of Liverpool for his doctoral studies. Iain worked with Sue and Mike on developing new methods for detecting and assessing dental caries – in particular how this could be done sooner and with more precision. In 2003 Iain joined The School of Dentistry at Manchester and in 2005 joined the Colgate Palmolive Dental Health Unit as a research fellow. A promotion to Senior Lecturer followed and then a personal fellowship in the form of a Department of Health Clinician Scientist Award. Iain and colleagues at the DHU continued to develop evidence to support the use of water fluoridation as a public health measure as well as undertaking randomized controlled trials of caries prevention products and therapeutic interventions. At the same time Iain undertook his specialty training in Dental Public Health – becoming a graduate of the University with an MPH degree and satisfying the Royal College examinations in 2011. Iain has worked closely with NHS colleagues in Trafford and Greater Manchester integrating research findings with pragmatic solutions for the NHS.
Junior presenter: Juliet Price, Centre for Health Economics, IPH, “Predicting NHS orthodontic treatment outcomes”
Juliet is currently completing a PhD at the School of Dentistry and the Centre for Health Economics. The PhD aims to investigate socioeconomic-related inequality in the provision and outcomes of NHS orthodontic treatment for children. Juliet has also worked on a Cochrane systematic review of financial incentive schemes in dentistry and a needs-based workforce planning model for NHS orthodontics. Juliet completed her BA Hons degree in Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, and then gained a master’s degree in Public Health from Imperial College London. She spent a year working with a healthcare consultancy on health technology assessments (HTAs), patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) and the economic and humanistic burden of inflammatory arthritides, before beginning her PhD.
About the research series:

Each month one host School or Institute from the Faculty will pair with a different School or Institute to highlight and showcase similar topics from different perspectives. The 2014 series is led by Professor David Eisner and administered from the Faculty Research Office.
Schedule:
Held on Wednesday lunchtimes, each meeting lasts an hour, including two 20-25 minute presentations – one from a junior and one from a more senior member of Faculty staff.
