Cara researches theories of resource rights and self-determination, including questions on claims to ocean resources, to rivers, and overlapping claims of self-determination over resources. Cara also works on related issues such as applied ethics, history of philosophy, legitimate political authority, immigration theory, global moral responsibility, the role of moral arbitrariness in political theory, and property rights.

She is currently a project partner on the Norwegian Research Council grant 'Political Philosophy Looks to Antarctica'. Cara is the current recipient of an Irish Research Council project grant to study territorial rights and another IRC project grant to study territorial rights over rivers.
