This talk begins with an overview of the cultural value of urbanization and goes ahead to unpack how globalization and climate change impact urban heritage assets. Using case studies from Lagos, Nigeria, we highlight how attempts at implementing globalizing urban visions are inadvertently stripping away natural, built and cultural heritage elements. By examining how well Lagos is doing regarding the principles of Heritage Governance, we find gaps regarding all five principles of legitimacy, strategic direction, performance, responsibility and justice; and recommend actions and opportunities that amplify the cultural value of urbanization.
Refreshments will be provided!
