Topological Data Analysis Ball Mapper: A Tool for Visualizing Multidimensional Datasets
Abstract
In the social sciences we have a wealth of data through which to understand society and upon which to form inference. Introducing the Topological Data Analysis (TDA) Ball Mapper algorithm it is shown how complex multi-dimensional databases may be visualized in an abstract two-dimensional form that faithfully retains all topological information. Creating a cover of the data outcomes of interest may be plotted onto the space to understand how they vary across the space. Challenges for such techniques in the social sciences are discussed and alternatives related. Constituency Brexit voting data is used to demonstrate the stories that may be told; updating to reflect December’s election shows more promise. A second example with welfare shows how policymakers might more effectively target resource.
