"Investigating the impact of type 2 immunity on haematopoiesis"
Abstract: I will discuss two related projects we have been working on, both looking at the impact of chronic worm infection on haematopoiesis. Haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) respond to cytokines such as IL-1 and interferons in acute viral/bacterial infection or inflammation, but much less is known about how type 2 immunity impacts on HSC and bone marrow (BM). We have investigated this using a murine model of chronic schistosomiasis. I will discuss the impact of infection on BM cytokines, HSC phenotype and function, and the extent to which these changes persist after parasite clearance. I will then talk about our work on platelets, which as well as their well-known role in haemostasis, are emerging as key immune modulators. We will discuss how schistosome infection causes thrombocytopenia, assess platelet phagocytosis, and downstream consequences for immune cells.
