Do Standards in Global Value Chains Support or Undermine the Sustainable Development Goals? with Professor Raphael Kaplinsky
Standards matter to global trade. But they can play a dual role, allowing some producers to be included in Global Value Chains while at the same time, preventing others from sharing in the gains from trade. This raises critical challenges. Professor Raphael Kaplinsky, Emeritus Professor at the University of Sussex (Science Policy Research Unit- SPRU) will discuss who gains and who loses. How will this affect the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? And what, if anything can be done about it?
This lecture is part of the Rising Powers Public Lecture Series, which forms part of the final conference and culmination of the ESRC's five year research programme on "Rising Powers and Interdependent Futures", exploring the role of Brazil, China, India, Russia and South Africa in the global economy.
