Professor Olivier Richon, Head of the Photography programme at the Royal College of Art, will be giving a seminar that considers Antoine Watteau's painting 'The Indifferent' (1718) and relates the notion of indifference to Kant's judgement of taste. It argues that there is an analogy between the Libertine's ethics of indifference regarding love and passion, and an aesthetics of taste based upon a disinterested judgement. An indifference to love as much as an indifference regarding an aesthetic judgement would be the price to pay for the reward of pleasure.
