Our immune system is crucial in protecting us from infection, but must be tightly regulated to prevent harmful immune responses against our own tissues. Failure in such regulation can lead to inflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease We will discuss our recent work identifying a novel pathway that controls inflammatory immune responses, which involves activation of the cytokine TGF-beta by a specialised subset of T-cells called regulatory T-cells. Our findings have uncovered novel potential therapeutic targets for the control of T-cell-mediated tissue damage in devastating inflammatory disorders.
