Bring your KS3 school children and join us at Jodrell Bank for an exciting day, celebrating two momentous events in British space exploration:
70th anniversary of the arrival of Sir Bernard Lovell at Jodrell Bank in December 1945 of Sir Bernard Lovell, beginning his pioneering scientific career and establishing the world leading Jodrell Bank Observatory.
The launch of Tim Peake, the European Space Agency’s first British Astronaut, into space to join the crew of the International Space Station
Begin the day by looking back at Jodrell Bank’s role in the space race; hear a unique insight into its ongoing work to look further and deeper into space with a talk by Professor Tim O’Brien, Associate Director of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics.
At 11.00 watch special, live coverage of Tim Peake launching into space for his Principia mission on the International Space Station. Tim is the European Space Agency’s first British Astronaut to travel to the ISS where he will be staying for six months. Your class will learn how they can follow Tim’s amazing journey themselves and will discover more about the team who put astronauts into space.
After lunch there will be an opportunity to visit the Discovery Centre to find out about the wonders of the Universe and the questions that Jodrell Bank astronomers are working to answer. The day rounds off with our fascinating ‘Destination Space’ science show with live demonstrations of the science behind space exploration.
Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre is delighted to have co-developed the Destination Space programme with teams at the National Space Centre in Leicester, Science Museum in London and led by the Association of Science and Discovery Centres. Backed by the UK Space Agency, the programme will provide children with a unique opportunity to learn about human space flight and follow life on the International Space Station. Special curriculum linked activities for school children will be starting from January 2016.
