We often make claims about the obligations of groups. We talk about the obligations of states, of people in a subway car, of the international community, or even of humanity as a whole. Yet the precise nature of these group obligations remains unclear. This workshop bring together philosophers addressing the following (and related) questions: Which groups can bear obligations, if any? How do those obligations distribute to group members? Are group obligations fully reducible to individual obligations? What obligations might ‘outsiders’ have regarding obligation-bearing groups? How do we solve the problem of shortfalls in distributed obligations? How do group obligations shift in circumstances where not all members comply? What obligations do individuals have to ‘trigger’ group action? Speakers will address these and related issues from both theoretical and applied perspectives
