Taking Positions when Talking Networks
Viewing networks as data rather than representations of systems, we break the suggestive bond between phenomenon and metaphor. As a consequence, networks are normalized: to be empirically meaningful, their modeling and analysis requires the same level of theoretical justification that as is common for samples, time series, and other data. I will argue that this normalization is aided by decomposing the network approach into more elementary building blocks and should, maybe counter-intuitively, result in a push for and expansion of network research.
