This workshop, jointly sponsored by the University of Manchester philosophy department and the Mind Association, considers the practical implications of metaphysics on policy, legislation, and practice, and vice versa.
Many of our societies’ legal verdicts and political judgements appear to appeal to metaphysical claims about the world and its contents. Likewise, some of societies’ legal verdicts and political judgements appear to alter social reality in some sense. Our aim at this workshop is to understand this complicated relationship between our metaphysical commitments and our legislative, judicial and political decision-making. To that end, our speakers will be considering the ways in which these domains might alter or impact on one another and discussing specific examples where this has occurred. All attendees should expect to come away with a better understanding of this relationship between politics, the law and ontology.
