The two-day workshop provides the opportunity to gain a thorough introduction to the software and practice tasks using one’s own data. The focus is on gaining confidence in the early tasks of setting up projects efficiently, exploring and coding data whilst having an eye on longer term tasks. This is an NVivo 11 for Windows course. Participants using the Mac version are welcome to attend but the main part of the course will cover the functions available for the Windows version, which are not all the same for the Mac version.
The first day uses sample data in order to become familiar with tools and functions, following through common tasks as a group and practicing exercises as individuals. Work is structured to provide step-by-step support for commonly used early software tools, with others demonstrated to illustrate longer-term potential.
The second day provides participants with the opportunity to get started using NVivo with their own project data. This may comprise interview/focus-group transcripts, audiovisual data, documentary evidence etc. The first part of the day focuses on translating the tasks explored on day one into practice. Individuals and teams work independently with the support of the tutor. The remainder of the day focuses on experimenting with more sophisticated interrogation tools. Possibilities and implications are discussed, demonstrated and practiced.
Course objectives:
- To provide an overview of the potential uses of NVivo for qualitative and mixed methods research
- To provide an understanding of the role of NVivo in the research cycle
- To enable participants to set-up an NVivo project that reflects the research design and analytic needs of their project
- To provide participants with hands-on practice with operating the software
- To provide participants with a long-term view of their potential use of NVivo
- To enable participants to plan for their continued use of NVivo within the context of their methodology and analytic strategy
Prerequisites: This workshop assumes no prior knowledge about NVivo. However, those that have already started using NVivo can bring their work with them and continue with it during the workshop. Participants do not need data to participate in this workshop, as sample data can be provided, however participants will get more out of the workshop if they bring their own research materials – this may be literature files, transcripts of interview or focus-group discussions, etc. field notes, audio/video recording or any other documents they are working with.
